WHAT IS HARD WATER?
Hard water is water that contains high amounts of minerals like calcium and magnesium.
In its original form, water doesn't contain any minerals. As water flows through natural pathways, it picks up minerals and other dissolvable solids.
Which means: higher the mineral amount, harder the water. These minerals offer great nutritional value to a healthy diet, but they can be very problematic for your hair and skin.
HOW IS HARD WATER LINKED WITH HAIR DAMAGE?
One particular mineral found in hard water is calcium carbonate. When it comes in direct contact with your scalp, calcium creates a build-up AKA calcification. You might be wondering, "I take calcium as a dietary supplement, isn't that something good for our bodies?" And yup, you're 100% right.
Hard water can lead to hair loss when calcium components make foaming agents in your shampoo more difficult to rinse off, leaving behind soap scum (left over shampoo and calcium) that coats your scalp and clog hair follicles.
The clogged hair follicles, as a result, reduces healthy nutrients from reaching your scalp and may contribute to hair loss.
