WONDERING HOW OFTEN YOU SHOULD SHOWER? HERE'S WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY
Ever wonder whether your twice a day showers might be too much? It just might, at least for some people, as the number varies from person to person.
But generally, dermatologists recommend somewhere between 2 to 3 times/week. Dr. Elaine Larson, an infectious disease expert at Columbia University School of Nursing, explains, "People think they're showering for hygiene or being cleaner. But bacteriologically, that's often not the case."
The main issue with showering too frequently is that it strips away natural oils that protect and moisturizes your skin. This leads to skin dryness, irritates sensitive skin, and eczema. Also, using products high in alkaline soap changes the pH in your skin. It makes it more vulnerable to bacterial invasion.
Now obviously, if you work up a sweat on the treadmill daily or spend a lot of time doing activities outdoors, it's probably a good idea to shower afterward, so you don't offend your loved ones. The same applies if you work on jobs that give you a specific odor (restaurant, bar, factories, etc.) "Season and climate play a role, too," Dr. Newsom points out to Self Magazine. "The same person who showers every day during a hot, humid summer, may opt for once every two days during a cold, dry winter."
You can still take a daily shower, make sure you do it right:
Use a shower filter to prevent chlorine, hard metals, and other nasties in your water. All these impurities in your shower can lead to hair loss, split ends, dry and sensitive skin, and even a change in your hair color.
Prevent excessive long showers that strip away your skin's natural oils. Consider keeping your shower routine to 10 minutes, and don't forget to apply moisturizer after.
Try to avoid extremely hot water and harsh soaps. Instead, A warm shower with gentle products is more calming for your skin. Try to avoid harsh ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate, which dries your skin.
Limit the use of exfoliators as they can create microscopic scratches on your skin. This can lead to dryness, irritation, and sensitivity.
